Marnus Labuschagne Omitted from Australian One-Day International Team Against Team India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from Australia's three-game ODI series facing India, with in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a shock inclusion.
Recent Form Result in Exclusion
The right-hander was left out from the one-day international team following managing only a single run in each of his two innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. He has a best innings of forty-seven in his previous ten ODI batting appearances.
Labuschagne has featured in 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now work towards a return to the Test side in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.
Surprise Inclusion and Team Updates
Labuschagne has shown signs of a improvement in form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw could to make his ODI debut in the upcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.
The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a red-ball recall as Australia search for a answer to their top-order woes.
Bowling Returns and Fitness News
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after having time off since performing well for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures
Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the last match against New Zealand to clinch a two-nil victory last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the later stages of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from October 29.
