World Health Organization Confronts Major Workforce Cuts Following US Financial Pullout

The international public health agency revealed intentions to cut its staff by almost a fourth – amounting to more than two thousand jobs – by the middle of 2026.

Funding Crisis Prompts Substantial Restructuring

This move follows after the United States, previously the organization's biggest contributor, pulled out financial support previously this year.

Washington was contributing about 18% of the agency's overall funding, creating a substantial budgetary gap.

Projected Workforce Cuts

According to organizational estimates, the staff is expected to drop from nine thousand four hundred and one posts in early 2025 to approximately seven thousand and thirty by mid-2026.

This reduction of 2,371 positions comprises job cuts, retirements, and natural attrition.

"The past year has been one of the most difficult in WHO's existence, as we undertook a challenging but essential journey of prioritisation and realignment," stated the organization's leader.

Budget Gap Persists

This Geneva-based organization now confronts a funding gap of 1.06 billion dollars for the 2026-2027 period, amounting to nearly a fourth of its required budget.

This figure represents an reduction from a previous projected gap of 1.7 billion dollars noted in spring.

Not Included Funding

The budget calculations exclude an additional 1.1 billion dollars in expected funding from ongoing discussions with various contributors.

A spokesperson for the agency noted that the current unfunded part of the budget is in fact lower than in earlier periods, attributing this to several reasons:

  • Reduced overall budget
  • The launch of a fresh fundraising effort
  • Higher in participating countries' mandatory fees

This realignment initiative is now approaching its end, paving the way for the organization to move forward with a renewed operational model.
