UN Lifts Penalties on Syria's Leader Ahead of Presidential Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to a US resolution removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his White House visit the coming week.

He became provisional head of state after leading a revolutionary movement that removed the former president in winter 2024, concluding thirteen long years of civil war.

Washington's ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a strong political signal" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a new era" since Assad was deposed.

Sharaa was under UN sanctions in his role as head of the Islamist group HTS, previously associated with the terrorist network. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of global extremist entities during July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on penalties against the Syrian interior official Anas Khattab.

The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of the sanctions, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation toward America and to friendly nations for their support the Syrian nation and citizens."

Upcoming White House Meeting

President Sharaa's presidential meeting on Monday follows President Trump said the Syrian leader achieved "significant advancement" towards bringing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.

Following their discussion, Trump said Sharaa had "a real shot to unify the country".

Both presidents held discussions for the first time this past May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of Arab nations.

Following that encounter, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" having a "formative history".

His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country prior to breaking relations back in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

The upcoming meeting will not be the president's debut journey to the US during this period. This past fall, he made history as the initial Syrian president to address the global assembly in Manhattan in almost 60 years.

During his address, he declared the nation was "regaining its deserved status within the global community" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
